Domingos Isabelinho: The Reading Gaze and the Expanded Field of Comics
I will start my presentation talking about my book The Reading Gaze and the rationale behind it, namely the concept, caught in Rosalind Kraus, of an expanded field. My expanded field of comics is an anti-essentialist POV. My main concern when defending the concept was the fact that a restrictive, dictionary-like, definition, prevents experimentation. I will talk briefly about the directions the expanded field of comics could go to arrive at Medieval comics and the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the true center of the presentation. I will end by talking about my, putative, second The Reading Gaze book and the restricted field of comics in it.
Domingos Isabelinho was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1960. He has been a comics critic since 1990. He wrote for Portuguese, American, British and French magazines. In 2012 he was invited to the seminar Aesthetics of Contemporary Comics in Oslo (Norway). He wrote the preface to an Italian and an American edition of The Labyrinth by Guido Buzzelli, the latter published by Floating World Comics. He participated in Noah Berlatsky's blog The Hooded Utilitarian and wrote on his own blog The Crib Sheet. In May 2022 he published The Reading Gaze, a book collecting some of his writings. He is currently planning a second The Reading Gaze volume.
